Lesson 5.3 : Understanding the Factors that Influence Decision-Making
Students will examine personal and social factors that influence decision-making, and strengthen their skills by applying the FACE Decision-Making Model.
This lesson is aligned with the following learning outcomes from the NL Grade 5 Health Curriculum:
Drug Education
- Realize that alcohol is a drug (depressant)
- Identify reasons for drinking and not drinking alcohol
- Develop awareness of the danger of inhalants
- Identify alternate ways to deal with personal problems
- Identify some constructive activities to do instead of using substances
Mental Health
- Identify personal interests, abilities and strengths.
- Recognize what is realistic in terms of personal achievement.
Relationships
- Apply the decision-making process to daily activities.
- Examine some of the advantages and disadvantages of independent decision-making
Learning Activities
The following activities are designed to support the delivery of this lesson and help reinforce key concepts. Some activities are available in multiple formats to offer flexibility and accommodate teacher or student preferences.
- Learning Activity 1: Influential Factors and Decision-Making
- Infographic: Factors Affecting Decision-Making
Students will use the Factors Influencing Decision-Making infographic to discuss how different influences can affect choices around healthy and unhealthy behaviours
- Exploration: Making Smart Decisions
Students will examine situations where youth face decisions about alcohol or drug use.
- Exit Reflection Card: Influential Factors and Decision-Making
Students will complete an exit card to reflect on a past decision and the factors that influenced the decision.
- Learning Activity 2: Making Decisions: How Would You FACE the Situation?
- FACE Decision-Making Model Scenarios
Students will review the FACE Decision-Making Model and apply it to each scenario by discussing how they would approach the scenario using the model.
Scenario 1: Chatting with Coach
- Sharing & Reflection: Exit Reflection Card
Students will reflect on the scenarios and share activities that help them feel better when they are feeling down or stressed.
