Lesson 5.2 : Assessing Healthy and Risk Behaviours
Students will identify healthy and risky behaviours in daily life and in relation to medication or substance use, and use the FACE Decision-Making Model to assess their behaviours.
This lesson is aligned with the following learning outcomes from the NL Grade 5 Health Curriculum:
Drug Education
- Realize that alcohol is a drug (depressant).
- Identify some constructive activities to do instead of using substances.
Mental Health
- Identify personal interests, abilities and strengths.
- Understand the interrelationship of physical and mental health, and general well-being.
Relationships
- Apply the decision-making process to daily activities.
- Outline some personal and peer problems and plan how to deal with them.
Learning Activities
The following activities are designed to support the delivery of this lesson and help reinforce key concepts. Some activities are available in multiple formats to offer flexibility and accommodate teacher or student preferences.
- Learning Activity 1: Understanding Healthy and Risk Behaviours
- T-Chart Activity: Healthy and Risk Behaviours
Students will use a T-Chart to list activities and decide whether they are healthy or risky behaviours.
- Assessing Risk Spectrum Activity: Assessing Risk Spectrum (Blank)
Students will use the Assessing Risk Spectrum to categorize activities as low- or high-risk behaviours.
- Assessing Risk Spectrum Activity: Situation Cards
Students will read each situation card, discuss the behaviours, and place them on the Assessing Risk Spectrum from low to high risk.
- Exit Reflection Card: Healthy and Risk Behaviours
Students will reflect on their own healthy and risk behaviours through this exit reflection.
- Learning Activity 2: Making Choices: Healthy and Risk Behaviours
- FACE Decision-Making Model:
Students will work through scenarios using the FACE Decision-Making Model, while teachers may reference the teacher version to guide the lesson
Scenario 1: How Am I Going to Get Home? (Student Version)
Scenario 2: Fitting In or Saying No? (Student Version)
- Exit Reflection Card: Making Choices
Students will share ideas from the scenario discussions and explore other real-life situations where the FACE Decision-Making Model can be applied.
